CMTNL Continuing Education CEU Requirements

Registered Massage Therapists practicing in Newfoundland and Labrador must complete 30 CEUs (continuing education units) in massage therapy during the three-year licensing cycle. At least 20 CEUs must be earned from Category A, while the remaining 10 may be from either Category A or Category B.

Understanding Category A & B CEUs for Massage Therapists

The College of Massage Therapists of Newfoundland and Labrador (CMTNL) classifies continuing education units (CEUs) into two primary categories: Category A and Category B. Category A CEUs are earned through activities directly related to massage therapy, while Category B CEUs cover complementary modalities that fall within the scope of practice.

Category A CEUs (Core Massage Therapy) and Activities

These CEUs focus on essential skills and knowledge directly related to massage therapy:

  • Massage Techniques – Learn new or advanced methods like chair massage, deep tissue massage, myofascial release, hot/cold therapy, and craniosacral therapy.
  • Anatomy & Physiology – Study the human body's structure and function as it relates to massage therapy.
  • Core RMT Competencies – Improve massage skills, including charting/record keeping, infection control, professionalism, ethics, and legal considerations.
  • Evidence-Based Practice – Stay updated with the latest research supporting massage therapy effectiveness.
  • First Aid & CPR – Essential certifications for all massage therapists.
  • Teaching – Earn CEUs by preparing to teach a massage therapy course or updating course content significantly.

Category B CEUs (Complementary Modalities) and Activities

The CMTNL recognizes that some modalities, while not strictly within the scope of massage therapy, can complement treatments and enhance therapeutic outcomes. These Category B modalities include, but are not limited to:

  • Acupuncture and Traditional Chinese Medicine – Techniques such as cupping, Gua Sha, Tuina/Tui Na, and Acupressure.
  • Professional Development – Public Speaking, Insurance, Business Practices, Management, or Marketing
  • Mind-Body Techniques – Aromatherapy, Pilates, Yoga, Guided Imagery & Meditation
  • Energy Work – Modalities like Reflexology, Healing Touch, and Reiki.

By integrating these complementary modalities, massage therapists can broaden their expertise and offer enhanced wellness solutions to their clients.

Continuing education ensures therapists refine their skills and stay up-to-date with evolving practices. Keep learning and growing!

Key Points to Keep in Mind

  • Massage therapists must complete 30 CEUs per credit cycle, with at least 20 from Category A and up to 10 from Category B.
  • 1 CEU = 2 hours of participation in an approved activity.
  • CEU records should be maintained in the massage therapist’s professional portfolio.
  • CEUs cannot be carried over to the next cycle.
  • Massage therapists are responsible for adhering to CEU policies and staying informed about any updates.

Staying on top of continuing education ensures compliance and keeps professionals equipped with the latest knowledge and skills!
